Project Details

After a tanker truck fire on I-75 in Hazel Park caused the freeway overpass at Nine Mile Road to collapse, MDOT initiated a Design-Build proposal to reconstruct the bridge.  In early October 2009, the team led by Walter Toebe Construction was awarded the project.  As the Lead Bridge Designer on the team, Bergmann Associates prepared design plans and specifications for the new structure design.  The design and detailing of the new bridge was complicated by the requirement that a future bridge arrangement was to be incorporated into the design.  The design had to allow for the median pier built as part of this project to be demolished and replaced with a new pier at a different skew and located approximately 15 feet to the east.  This will allow for a planned future realignment of I-75 in the area to occur with only minimal modifications to the bridge.  The complex design and detailing of the new bridge was completed within the Design-Build process and the bridge was opened up to traffic only 2 months after contract award.
