Project Details

The new demand for student housing across the country has heightened our awareness of the needs of students and the important impact their lives outside the classroom has on their overall college experience.  The college called for the construction of a new 84 bed residence hall to meet the basic needs of student housing as well as the following goals:

•Enhance the quality of student life
•Create a gateway to the North Village
•Create different spaces which promote various levels of student interaction
•Show an active student life.

Nested between existing residence halls, Putnam Hall is a four-story brick building with a lower level professor apartment and common areas.  Each floor has ten double dwelling units with a shared bathroom between two units.  A two story lobby/lounge is located at the northeast corner of the building and acts as a lantern which signals the entrance to the North Campus residence halls.  Active public spaces such as stairs and lounges were pushed to the corners of the building and have been made more transparent to show activity and movement within the building as well as opening the building to the various green spaces adjacent to the site.

Students enjoy furnished lounges with full kitchens, conference and study rooms, music rooms and outdoor spaces.  Translucent canopies connect the new residence hall to the adjacent complex.
