ABCD honors Bergmann for work on Red House Lake Dam & Bridge

National architecture, engineering and planning firm Bergmann was awarded the 2019 Bridge Award for its rehabilitation of the Red House Lake Dam and Bridge by the Western New York Chapter of the Association for Bridge Construction and Design (ABCD). The project, located in Allegany State Park in the Town of Red House, Cattaraugus County, New York, won in the $2M+ category.

The dam and arched bridge was built across Red House Brook in 1929 to create a recreational lake for the park. Bergmann was contracted by NYS Office of Parks Recreations and Historic Preservations (NYS OPRHP) to perform a comprehensive inspection and assessment of the dam and bridge structure, including development of a full Engineering Assessment (EA), gauging the performance and condition of the dam.

“The safety and functionality of the Red House Lake Dam and Bridge is critical to park-goers’ enjoyment of the lake in the spring and summer seasons,” said Josh Repp, Project Manager, Bergmann. “We are proud to be a part of restoring the structure so future generations can continue to utilize this beloved part of the park.”

Bergmann provided NYS OPRHP a report outlining the findings of the EA, identifying areas recommended for dam safety compliance improvements and investigating bridge repair/replacement options. Final design included dam stability improvements, low-level-outlet improvements, bridge superstructure replacement, concrete repair, tree removals, embankment stabilization measures and other miscellaneous site improvements. Bergmann subsequently provided construction administration and inspection services to complete the structure's rehabilitation.
