Three railways that utilized national architecture, engineering and planning firm Bergmann’s grant writing services received grant funds under the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) program in 2019. The funds granted total $11.86 million for use in a variety of infrastructure improvements including crossing and signal upgrades and track replacements.

In this round of applications, Bergmann provided grant writing services to four railway clients, achieving a win rate of 75 percent and earning 3.6 percent market share of all winning U.S. grant applications for this round of CRISI federal funding. Clients receiving grants include Lake State Railway Company of Michigan, as well as railways headquartered in New York and Indiana.

“The work of Bergmann on the benefit-cost analysis and review of the application was no doubt instrumental in LSRC receiving this grant, helping achieve the goal of improving safety and continuing to support the long-term future of our growing rail customer base,” said John A. Rickoff, president and CEO, Lake State Railway.

Based on its extensive experience and success in helping railroad clients apply for federal and state funding programs, Bergmann was one of just three firms initially selected by the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) as a preferred provider of grant application services in 2018. The firm’s grant-writing capabilities extend to any size railway and transit company under any classification and encompass all phases of the application process, including environmental support services, permitting, preliminary engineering, cost estimating, cost-benefit analysis, and any other elements unique to a particular grant program.

“Railways remain vital to the economy of many American towns and cities and adequate funding is required to ensure the infrastructure is modern and safe,” said Carmen Garozzo, rail practice leader for Bergmann. “Railway mangers and operators have a lot on their plates, so having our expertise to optimize their grant applications and meet the specific requirements of each program is invaluable to keeping the trains running now and in the future.”
