National architecture, engineering and planning firm Bergmann has hired industry veteran, John Steinmetz, FAICP, to join its Northeast Buildings Group as a Principal Planner. John brings nearly 27 years of experience working as a community planner and visionary to Bergmann. In his new role, Steinmetz will support projects in the Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Southern Tier, Greater Philadelphia, and Eastern Pennsylvania regions.

“John brings a wealth of expertise to our team that will complement and strengthen our reputation as a leader in providing high-quality community planning and zoning services,” said Andrew Raus, senior vice president, Bergmann. “He is a community engagement and zoning specialist and will bring new innovative techniques to ensure inclusive and equitable involvement in every community-led planning initiative.”

According to Steinmetz, he was interested in this position based on the work Bergmann does at the intersection of urban planning and design, as well as the firm’s focus on community, economic, and environmental resiliency.

“I’m thrilled to join the Bergmann team and have the opportunity to work on large-scale, complex projects that have a great impact on their communities,” said Steinmetz. “Bergmann is a firm I have admired for a long time for their impressive projects across the state of New York and I look forward to working alongside colleagues in the Northeast Buildings Group.”

Steinmetz previously founded his own planning practice and has held positions with several firms and the City of Rochester. His portfolio consists of a wide range of planning and community development projects including comprehensive plans, regulatory updates, farmland protection plans, active transportation studies, and waterfront and downtown revitalization efforts.

Steinmetz was inducted into the prestigious College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners (FAICP) in 2020. In addition to membership in AICP and the American Planning Association, he holds a vast variety of other professional affiliations and has received numerous awards and honors. He holds a bachelor’s degree in City Planning from University of Virginia. He has also studied Urban Studies and Public Policy at the State University of New York at Buffalo as well as Public Administration at State University of New York at Brockport.
