Scholarship Will Support RIT Students Enrolled in Colleges of Engineering, Design and Sustainability
National architecture, engineering and planning firm Bergmann is proud to announce the establishment of a new scholarship, the Donald J. Bergmann Endowed Scholarship, with Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to honor Bergmann’s late founder. This scholarship will provide support to RIT students enrolled in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering, the College of Engineering Technology, Golisano Institute for Sustainability, and/or the College of Art and Design.
Bergmann established the Donald J. Bergmann Endowed Scholarship with a gift of $50,000 and will contribute an additional $2,500 to be awarded to the first scholarship recipient. Full-time undergraduate students in Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical), Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology and Environmental Sustainability, Health and Safety, Interior Design or Masters in Design can apply for the scholarship.
“This scholarship was established to pay tribute to Don’s commitment to education, the engineering and architecture fields, and the Rochester area,” said Pietro V. Giovenco, President & CEO of Bergmann. “As a lifelong learner who was dedicated to fostering the growth and development of young professionals, as well as a longtime supporter of RIT, this scholarship is an ideal way to honor Don’s legacy.”
In addition to this new scholarship, Bergmann has a legacy of active involvement with RIT. The firm has long history of employing RIT grads and interns from various degree programs, has employee representation on the Dean’s Counsel and Advisory Board for Saunders College of Business, provided architectural and engineering services for RIT Institute Hall, and developed a leadership training program in partnership with Saunders College of Business to support on-going development of a cohort of Bergmann leaders and managers.
In 1980, Donald J. Bergmann founded Bergmann (known then as Bergmann Associates) as a consulting engineering firm in Rochester. Under Don’s leadership as president and CEO, Bergmann grew into one of the largest architectural and engineering firms in the region. He was active in numerous national, state and local engineering organizations, serving as president of the Rochester chapter of the Consulting Engineers Council and New York State Society of Professional Engineers Inc. Over his long career, he received many honors such as Engineer of the Year by the Rochester Engineering Society Inc. and the National Society of Professional Engineers’ service award. Don Bergmann passed away in December 2019.
