John Steinmetz, a principal planner with national architecture, engineering and planning firm Bergmann, an affiliate of Colliers Engineering and Design, was recently inducted to the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) College of Fellows Class of 2020. The designation of AICP Fellow is the highest honor bestowed upon a planner by the AICP and honors outstanding contributions to the profession.

The formal induction ceremony is held every two years but was postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s ceremony was held in San Diego, California and honored both the 2020 and 2022 classes.

A professional planner for more than 27 years, Steinmetz’ portfolio comprises a wide range of planning and community development projects including comprehensive plans, regulatory updates, farmland protection plans, active transportation studies, and waterfront and downtown revitalization efforts. He is an active member of the Upstate NY American Planning Association and has served on his local village planning and town conservation boards across Western New York State. He joined Bergmann during the fall of 2021 after previously founding his own planning practice, as well as holding positions with several firms and the City of Rochester.

“This recognition is well-deserved and a testament to John’s tireless dedication to his profession, communities and team members,” said Kimberly Baptiste, AICP, Vice President, Northeast Buildings. “We are proud to have John as part of our team and grateful for his camaraderie and the passion he brings to his craft, serving as an enthusiastic champion and mentor for fellow planners. We congratulate him on this incredible achievement!”

According to the American Planning Association, “Fellows of AICP are nominated and selected by their peers to recognize and honor their outstanding contributions as a professional planner. The outcomes of their individual efforts left demonstrably significant and transformational improvements to the field of planning and the communities they served. All Fellows are long-time members of AICP and have achieved excellence in professional practice, teaching and mentoring, research, and community service and leadership.”
