The Ontario County Board of Supervisors and the County’s Department of Public Works, along with traffic safety specialists and emergency responders, today held a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of a major intersection redesign in the town of Farmington. The project converted an existing four leg, two-way stop controlled intersection at County Road 28 and Shortsville Road to a modern roundabout to promote safer travel.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, converting a rural, two-way stop controlled intersection into a roundabout can reduce the total number of crashes by up to 72%. Four legged roundabouts also reduce the number of potential vehicle conflict points from 32 to 8 compared to a conventional four-legged intersection.
“The introduction of a modern roundabout at the crossing of County Road 28 and Shortsville Road reflects the town of Farmington and Ontario County’s mutual commitment to safety,” said Farmington Town Supervisor Peter Ingalsbe. “Safety is a fundamental quality of life issue, and we believe the new traffic pattern created at this intersection will greatly contribute to safer vehicular travel here.”
Bergmann, a nationally recognized architecture, engineering and planning firm headquartered in Rochester, and Villager Construction, Inc. partnered with Ontario County to complete the $2.6 million roadway improvement project.
“The new roundabout represents an effective use of Federal Highway Administration resources in our community,” said Ontario County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jack Marren. “Ninety percent of the project was covered by federal Highway Safety Improvement Program dollars with the remaining balance from local funding.”
The project team had to consider numerous factors in their recommendations for improving the intersection, including avoiding any adverse impacts to Meeting House Park, the South Farmington Cemetery, an adjacent private septic system. Mitigating the effect of new lighting on neighboring residents while providing adequate curvature to slow motorists was also an essential element addressed by the project.
