The Rehabilitation of the DeRuyter Dam project has been awarded the 2020 Structures/Facilities Project of the Year Award by the Central NY Branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA).
Bergmann served as lead designer for the project, one of a number of dam safety projects the firm has with New York State Canal Corporation (NYSCC). The DeRuyter Dam is located near the north end of the DeRuyter Reservoir near the towns of Woodstock and Fabius, NY, and was built in 1861-1864 to supply water to the Old Erie Canal. The NYSCC identified the dam as a priority project as part of their continuing commitment to the safety of their infrastructure.
The Bergmann design team, together with general contractor The Wesson Group and sub consultants including McMahon & Mann Consulting Engineers, embarked on a complete redesign/rehabilitation to incorporate current dam safety best practices. Design included a reinforced concrete spillway, a new siphon water release system, drainage improvements, earthen stability berm and solar powered instrumentation and lighting system. Design occurred in 2019 and construction completed in 2020.
“This project was a major upgrade to a historical structure that required incredible cross-team and cross-organization collaboration,” stated Greg Johnson, PE, PMP, Practice Leader, Waterway Structures, Bergmann. “It’s one of many infrastructure improvement projects we are proud to complete in partnership with the NYSCC, with a focus on positively impacting public safety.”
The award was formally announced at the Central NY Branch of the APWA’s annual awards banquet on February 12th via a virtual ceremony.
