Giovenco takes over from Tom Mitchell, PE, who served as CEO for 14 years, and who will stay on as executive vice president for client relations and business development. Giovenco will also continue to serve as president of the firm.
Giovenco becomes only the firm’s third CEO since Bergmann Associates was founded in 1980 by Don Bergmann, PE, and six other professionals. Giovenco started at the firm as a project manager, working with clients such as Wal-Mart, the New York State Dormitory Authority and Griffiss Local Development Corp. He held a number of strategic leadership positions before becoming CEO.
“My goal will be to leverage the entrepreneurial spirit that started this company and combine it with the discipline, grit and determination that continues to make us a great firm,” said Giovenco. “To that end, I hope to leave this company to the next leader in an even a stronger position.”
Mitchell will take on new responsibilities in his role of executive vice president. He will oversee the corporate marketing team, direct business development, work on a number of special initiatives and continue to be a ‘Bergmann Ambassador,’ making use of his extensive professional connections.
“I want to thank Tom for his tremendous efforts over the past 14 years,” said Giovenco. “He has been a captain with a steady hand and everyone on board this ship has felt safe, confident and informed during his tenure.”
Bergmann Associates has experienced significant and steady growth over the past three decades. The firm started with six professionals and now has 400 employees. Bergmann Associates reorganized into three regional business units at the beginning of 2017 – Midwest, Atlantic and Northeast. Giovenco was selected as CEO by the Bergmann Associates Board of Directors, who are elected by the stockholders. Bergmann Associates is an employee-owned organization, with stock in the company owned by more than 140 of the professional employees. Mitchell announced the CEO transition to all Bergmann Associates employees at a recent town hall meeting.
“I have had my eye on Pete since the day I joined Bergmann Associates almost 16 years ago,” said Mitchell. “I recognized his untapped potential, and now I am both proud and delighted to turn the leadership of the company over to him.”
Giovenco holds an MBA from the Saunders Business School at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), as well as a B.T. in Civil Engineering from RIT and an AAS in Civil Technology from Monroe Community College. He is a board member for St. John’s Home and Rochester Downtown Development Corp. He also chairs the Deans’ Advisory Council at the Saunders Business School at RIT. He resides in Macedon with his wife, Suzanne.
For nearly four decades, Bergmann architects, engineers and planners have been delivering results to clients across the United States and Canada.
