National architecture, engineering and planning firm Bergmann won the Historic Restoration Award for its role in refurbishing Edmund B. Hayes Hall at the University at Buffalo (UB) School of Architecture and Planning. The firm was recognized at the IIDA NY Chapter Buffalo City Center’s Interior Design Awards Gala earlier this month alongside LeChase Construction and Bero Associates, which were also part of the project team.

The restoration of Hayes Hall on UB’s South Campus took place over the course of six years and was the largest-ever in the history of the circa-1866 building. Combining a complete restoration of the 79,085 sq. ft. structure’s exterior with reimagined interior spaces, the project revived a landmark for UB and the region and creates a flexible, dynamic learning environment for future architects and planners.

“We’re proud to have played a part in ensuring the iconic Hayes Hall continues to serve as inspiration for budding industry professionals,” said Andrew Raus, Vice President, Northeast Buildings, Bergmann. “The project retained much of the building’s design history while bringing its infrastructure into the 21st century through sustainable design and construction choices that will continue to pay off for UB and its students.”

The Hayes Hall project received LEED Gold Certification and raised the bar for sustainable building practices at UB. New infrastructure systems supporting cooling, heating, fire protection, power and communications were thoughtfully integrated throughout the facility. Dimly lit corridors were transformed into spaces with a pulse and rhythm using the cadence of doorways supplemented with informal gathering spaces. Elements of the building’s original 1866 details were restored and highlighted in coordination with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
