CR28 Shortsville Rd Roundabout

Bergmann redesigned a major intersection to a roundabout, resulting in safer travel for county residents.

Bergmann was contracted by Ontario County Public Works in Western New York to redesign a major intersection in the Town of Farmington. The project converted the existing four leg, two-way stop-controlled intersection at County Route 28 and Shortsville Road to a modern roundabout to promote safer travel. Prior to the redesign, the intersection experienced a crash rate roughly six times higher than the statewide average and was the site of two fatalities. In the 18 months following the redesign, the intersection realized an over 30% decrease in accidents.

Removal of the two-way stop eliminated right-angle crashes caused by drivers failing to yield or stop and mitigated a sight distance issue posed by historic Meeting House Park, located on the intersection’s northwest corner. Curvilinear approaches reduced traffic speeds from less than 55 mph to 30 mph and a mounded and low maintenance landscaped central island improved target value.

Bergmann’s design team developed a specification allowing for pre-purchase and installation of a pre-packaged water vault which kept the project on schedule while maintaining federal funds.

The design incorporated LED lighting system with adjustable levels and landscape lights in the central island, highlighting the intersection in darkness without subjecting adjacent residents to undue glare.

Construction of the $2.5 million project was completed under full closure with detours and a ceremonial ribbon cutting, attended by key project team members, County and Town officials and emergency responders was held in October 2020.

This was the third consecutive roundabout project Bergmann completed for Ontario County.

Project Highlights:

  • Removal of two-way stop and implementation of curvilinear approaches to reduce traffic speeds
  • Specifications for pre-purchase and installation of pre-packaged water vault to support project timeframe and budgetary goals
  • Design of mounded center island to provide focal point while promoting lower speeds
  • Adjustable LED lighting in center island, designed to mitigate neighbor disruption
  • Notable reduction in safety incidences post-design
