Lead designer for the Bayview North Clearance Improvement to provide clearance for double-stack rail cars to move freight.

The purpose of the Bayview North Clearance Improvement program is to provide a minimum 21-foot vertical clearance on CSX’s Philadelphia Subdivision from Philadelphia to Childs, Maryland. Although the immediate need was for the line to accommodate tri-level auto racks, this project will also provide clearance for double-stack rail cars to move freight through the Philadelphia area.

More than thirty freight trains a day operate over this subdivision and traffic is expected to increase as new the facilities began operations. The tight project schedule dictated that there would be no time to acquire additional right-of-way, so all work was designed to remain within the existing right-of-way boundary. The existing track was located primarily in a trench section, requiring soil nail walls and soldier pile and lagging retaining walls to ensure the structural integrity of the adjacent embankment slopes and infrastructure. Two overhead bridges and a tunnel were underpinned. A pump station was designed to improve the existing drainage conditions.
