Repairing for Safety while Preserving a Historic Structure
Bergmann provided multiple repair and design services to US-2 over the Cut River in Mackinac County, Michigan. The primary focus was the Cut River Bridge, a large, cantilevered deck truss located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The bridge repair work included fixing deteriorated gusset plates, substructure patching and restoring sandstone-facing blocks on the abutments. The bridge is a historic structure and required coordination with the State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO). The project also included load-rating the structure, performed using MIDAS software.
Project HIghlights
- Use of MIDAS Software - Load rating the structure, performed using MIDAS software. A custom spreadsheet was developed to "mine" output data from MIDAS for use in postprocessing spreadsheets. The load rating included the truss members, gusset plates, floor beams, stringers, tie-down assemblies, seated connections, and the reinforced concrete approach spans.
- Bridge Repair - Repair of a damaged downspout that is causing erosion of a critical slope, repairing gusset plates, and re-designing/fixing deteriorated parts of the bridge while protecting the historical value.
